This region presents predominant characteristics of temperate rainy oceanic climate that is preferably located in the Cordillera de la Costa, and in the Andean foothills, presenting characteristics of greater continentality due to its relative distance from the sea. This causes a greater contrast in the temperatures being minimum of 2 ° C and maximum of 23 ° C in the hottest months. Precipitations vary between 1,500 and 2,500 mm, producing dry periods of one to two months. To the north of the region, the warm temperate type with the lowest rainfall characteristic of the Biobío region predominates.

The cordon of Nahuelbuta hills traps oceanic influence and wet winds by reducing rainfall and increasing dry periods. On the coast there is a variety called the temperate oceanic climate of the western coast, which is characterized by abundant relative humidity and precipitations between 1,000 and 1,500 mm, it is high in the mountain range of the coast where the greatest rainfall occurs.

In the Cordillera de los Andes, the cold climate is predominant, characterized by an increase in rainfall of 3,000 mm per year and low temperatures throughout the year, over 1,500 meters above sea level solid rainfall and temperatures are below 0 ° C, dry periods are one to two months.

An increase in precipitation amounts and a decrease in temperatures allow the differentiation of the climate of the region from the rest of the domain of its northern neighbors.

The climatic characteristics of the region allowed the development of a true southern jungle in the past, but that was later intervened by the action of the man, replacing them by prairies for the cattle ranch and field of cultures. Real cleaning work was carried out in which trees were simply burned, resulting in erosion problems in the Cordillera de Nahuelbuta and other sectors. Today, in order to reverse this situation, we find in the region areas of national parks such as Tolhuaca, Nahuelbuta, Los Pangues, Villarrica, Lautaro and Huerquehue.

The region is rich in native forest

The characteristic species of the region is araucaria araucana, a humid zone, slow growing and large size. Characteristic species of the region, have been declared national monument to avoid its extinction. Other species present are canelo, oak, coigue, luma, mañio, lingue, coligue. There is also a large amount of scrub and plants, lichen pastures, mosses and giant ferns due to the humidity of the area. Although it is true the vegetation characteristic of the region is the forest with aspects of forest, there are places that present conditions of greater dryness due to the presence of the Cordillera de Nahuelbuta that acts as a climate screen and allows the existence of sclerophyllous forest.

The decline of the forest has also affected the native species of the region where birds and mammals of various species abound. Nowadays you can see foxes and chillas, quiques, chingues, wildcats or güiñas, dwarf deer or pudúes, coipos and bats. Among the birds colilargas, churrines, carpenters black, torcazas, bandurrias, peucos.
